GRADUATION DAY

While waiting for his name to be called to the stage to receive his diploma, Tim recalled some key events from the past four years. He thought back to Freshman Orientation, back when the campus seemed so big and course selection was so confusing; the introduction to so many new experiences from food plans, dorm rooms, and the campus bookstore was so overwhelming.

“What have I gotten myself into? There are so many people here that are smarter than me. They know what they want to be and where they are going upon graduation. I don’t have a clue!”

Tim’s reflection was interrupted when best friend and roommate, Scott, pushed him from behind.

Scott was one of those special people in life who always seemed to be there when you needed someone the most. From encouraging Tim to double-major in business and theology (which led to Tim’s nickname, “The Saintly Capitalist”), to loaning Tim money to get his car back when it was towed, to introducing Tim to his long-term girlfriend (and eventual wife) Andrea.

“I don’t know that I would have done without Scott. And for that matter, there is Professor ‘G’ who has taught me so very much; Joe, who endured the business honors program with me, and Austin who was great to hang out with. I am going to miss them all.”

At that moment, the speaker announced Tim’s name. With a big smile, accompanied by cheers from family and friends, Tim walked across the stage, shook the dean’s hand, grasped his well-earned diploma, posed for a picture, and walked off the stage into a new chapter in his life.

“Game on!” Tim said to himself as he held his diploma high, proud of his achievement, and happy for what was next to come.

This scene, played hundreds of thousands of times across the globe, represents one of life’s many milestones. Graduation day is an extraordinary day of accomplishment, recognition, and hope. The most important of these is hope. Hope that all the reading, tests, and presentations have prepared you for what is to come. Hope that the family and friends whose support and love got you through the tough times and celebrated with you in the good times, will not diminish or fade. Hope that the future is a bright one filled with happiness, laughter, and love.

Graduation Day: a day that is seemingly so brief, yet lives forever in our hearts and minds.

Happy Graduation Day!

Until Next Friday,
