Your First Day
/Welcome! It is a pleasure to spend a few minutes with you as you begin your first day with our company.
On my first day nearly 30 years ago, I remember being excited, nervous, and completely unsure of myself. I didn't have the right uniform. I didn't know where to park. I didn't know anyone. Maybe that's how some of you feel today. If it is, that's perfectly normal.
Since my first day, I've had opportunities I never imagined, worked with incredible people, and learned from outstanding leaders. But I'm still excited, I still get nervous, and I still make mistakes.
What I've learned is that success isn't about being perfect. It's about committing yourself to a process built around three questions: What? How? Why?
First, know what your job is. Second, know how to do it—with professionalism, teamwork, respect, and excellence. Our guests may forget what we did, but they'll always remember how we made them feel.
But the most important question is why. Your 'why' gives meaning to your work and carries you through difficult days.
My 'why' is simple: to be of service—to Team Members, Owners, Guests, and anyone whose life I have the opportunity to touch. Hospitality is, at its heart, people serving people.
When you focus on serving others, something remarkable happens. You discover purpose, fulfillment, and, more often than not, success.
As you begin your journey with Westgate, I'd like to leave you with three thoughts.
Be curious. Ask questions. Learn from the people around you.
Keep growing. Small improvements, made consistently over time, become extraordinary careers.
And never lose sight of your why.
Today is your first day. Thirty years ago, I was sitting where you are today. I had no idea where that first day would lead. It led to friendships, mentors, opportunities, and eventually the privilege of welcoming you.
Now it's your turn. Some of you will spend a few years at our company. Some of you may build an entire career here. Perhaps one day, one of you will stand on this very stage welcoming another group of new Team Members.
When that day comes, I hope you'll remember that success wasn't measured by your title. It was measured by the people whose lives you made better.
So I have one simple challenge for you: Choose to serve. Serve your Team Members. Serve our Owners. Serve our Guests. Serve with excellence. Serve with kindness.
If you do that consistently, success will find you—not because you chased success, but because success finds people who dedicate themselves to serving others.
For today, whether it’s your first day or 10,950th day (30 years), it is the first day of the rest of your life.
Until Next Friday,
Rob
